Humpback whales are known for their long migrations from temperate summering grounds to tropical wintering grounds. Around the world, the greatest winter concentrations of humpback whales are found in waters less than 200 meters (600 feet) deep, at latitudes of less than 25 degrees, and associated with oceanic banks or the shallows near islands.
