Advanced WhaleSail is a two-week program for three college credits offered through Cape Cod Community College for students ages 16-22 with intense immersion into the biology, natural history and conservation of cetaceans in the Gulf of Maine, as well as hands on cetacean, environmental and oceanographic data collection and time-honored seafaring skills.
All students are full participants in the voyage, standing watch and learning the arts and skills of traditional seafaring aboard this magnificent tall ship. Instructed by PCCS scientist on board, you will study whales by observing them in their environment, learn about the marine ecosystems that support them, and explore the issues-both modern and historic-that threaten the survival of these endangered species.
This course includes hands on cetacean data collection, including photographic, sightings and behavioral marine mammal data and analysis, as well as collection of data on the environmental and oceanographic conditions.
As sailors, instructed by the ship's professional crew, you will learn sail and line handling, how to steer by compass, navigate, make sailor's knots and splices, keep the logs, perform lookout and safety duties and all the other skills necessary to keep a sip safe on her course.
Advanced WhaleSail will be available again in 2008. Please check back for dates and scholarship information.
