WhaleSail offers 13-16 year old participants a once in a lifetime adventure watching whales up close and personal in their natural habitat while sailing aboard Spirit of Massachusetts. WhaleSail is a one-week adventure and ocean exploration for students to explore the marine environment and watch endangered large whales, while learning the time honored art of seafaring.
Through investigations with PCCS scientist and researchers, participants will observe whales while learning data collection and photo identification techniques, collect plankton samples, perform oceanographic experiments, visit historic sites and museums and share sea songs, games and stories.
Participants will learn sail and line handling, navigation, make sailor's knots and splices, perform lookouts and safety duties, as well as many other skills necessary to keep a ship safe on her course.
