The map
below depicts the Gulf of Maine, a semi protected body
of water bounded by Cape Cod and Georges Bank to the
south and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to the north.
The Northeast Channel opens the Gulf to the currents of
the open Atlantic. Light blue areas represent the
shallow coastal waters and banks (above 100m in depth)
while middle and dark blues represent the waters below
100m and 200m respectively. The waters off the
Continental Slope are much deeper still.
Right whale movements are still poorly understood but
can be summarized in the following way:
| December - May |
Cape Cod Bay |
winter/spring feeding grounds |
| April - June |
Great South Channel |
late spring feeding grounds |
| June - October |
Roseway Basin, Bay of Fundy |
summer feeding grounds
