The map below depicts the Gulf of Maine, a semi protected body of water bounded
by Cape Cod and Georges Bank to the south and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to
the north. The Northeast Channel opens the Gulf to the currents of the open
Atlantic. Light blue areas represent the shallow coastal waters and banks (above
100m in depth) while middle and dark blues represent the waters below 100m and
200m respectively. The waters off the Continental Slope are much deeper still.
Right whale movements are still poorly understood but can be summarized in the
following way:
Summer feeding grounds Roseway Basin, Bay of Fundy June - October
Late spring feeding grounds Great South Channel April - June
Winter/spring feeding grounds Cape Cod Bay December - May
