PCCS Kicks Off $3.5 Million Capital Fund & Endowment Drive ‘Coastal Campaign’ Earmarked for Marine Laboratory
(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) - The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies today announced the start up of a $3.5 million capital fund and endowment campaign for a marine laboratory and support for research, conservation and education programs.
The Coastal Campaign kicked off following Monday night’s vote at Provincetown Town Meeting where voters approved the sale to the Center of three small parcels behind the former High School Annex for $50,000. Last April, by a unanimous vote of town meeting, voters approved the sale of the building itself for $800,000. The sale of the additional land was necessary to provide access to the property and to upgrade the septic system.
Monday night’s vote was the last in a series of real estate transactions making it possible for the Center to convert the former Annex into a research and education campus.
Announcing the kick off of the Coastal Campaign was Barbara Birdsey of Centerville, chair of the capital drive and a well-known Cape philanthropist. Birdsey also announced that the Hiebert Charitable Foundation created by the estate of the late Ruth Hiebert of Provincetown, a long-time board member of the Center, had pledged $750,000 toward the campaign. “We are honored by the confidence the trustees of the foundation have bestowed upon us,” said Birdsey. “The foundation’s generosity brings the total of funds in hand or pledged to $2.2 million dollars. We are hoping that on the eve of the Center’s 30th anniversary other friends of the Center will further demonstrate the respect and appreciation we have for its research, education and advocacy of our marine environment,” she added.
“Although the real estate transactions have proven to be extraordinarily complex, the Center is grateful for the cooperation of the school committee, board of selectmen and town manager for making this possible,” said PCCS Executive Director Peter Borrelli.
