    PCCS Launches 2010 Winter Lecture Series in Wellfleet

    (CAPE COD, MA) - The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies will host a lecture series entitled New England Heritage and the Sea. These unique talks, each with a field trip component, will be presented by Jesse Mechling, director of education for PCCS. Lectures will be held at the Wellfleet Public Library and are free and open to the public. All field trips cost $75 per person and $65 per person for PCCS members. Fees apply to field trips only and include transportation and admission. Field trips require registration by February 24.     The History of Whaling
    Cape Cod was one of the original whaling centers in the United States. Learn the origins of commercial whaling, how it developed over the centuries, and what the current state of whaling is today.

    New Bedford Whaling Museum & Historic Park
    Join us for a Saturday field trip to the New Bedford Whaling Museum and National Historic Park. Fee includes transportation to New Bedford, admission and private tour of whaling museum, and of historic park.

    Maritime History
    Cape Codder's have a long tradition of making their living from the sea. From whalers to fisherman to merchant sailors, the Cape and its people have been shaped by the sea. Discover the rich maritime history of the Cape & Islands. Hear about the first shipwreck in North America, and learn how maritime commerce has shaped New England from past to present.

    Salem Historic Park & Peabody Essex Museum
    The Saturday field trip will take us to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem and the Salem Maritime Historic Park. Fee includes transportation to Salem, and admission to park and museum.

    Natural History of the Sea
    The ocean and resources found within have shaped human history and civilization since the beginning. The sea has been the world's meat market, super highway, medicine cabinet, and waste dump. Hear why our seas are so important, how humans have historically harnessed those resources; how the sea has changed, and what lies in the future for our watery planet.

    New England Aquarium
    Trip includes a tour of New England Aquarium. Learn about the wondrous creatures that occupy our oceans. Fee includes admission to NEAq and round trip transportation.
