PCCS Hires Director of Large Whale DisentanglementBiologist Gregory Krutzikowsky Hails from Oregon
(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) - The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) has hired Biologist Gregory Krutzikowsky from Newport, Oregon, as its first full-time director of large whale disentanglement. Krutzikowsky, who holds a master's degree in biological oceanography from Oregon State University, is expected to assume his duties at the Center's new Marine Laboratory in Provincetown on April 15.
"Greg complements our experienced large whale disentanglement team with his own background in marine science and conservation," said PCCS Executive Director Peter Borrelli. In his new role, Krutzikowsky will work with Dr. Charles "Stormy" Mayo, David Morin, Scott Landry, Brian Sharp, and Mackie Greene, all of whom participate in disentanglement events. Over the past twenty years, PCCS has helped to disentangle over 70 large whales wrapped in gear. Many of those were critically-endangered North Atlantic right whales.
Krutzikowsky is also experienced in the emerging field of marine satellite telemetry, technology PCCS employs during disentanglement events coordinated from the PCCS Field Office in Maine by Bob Bowman, coordinator for the Large Whale Disentanglement Network. Krutzikowsky's work has also included extensive aerial surveillance, photo and video documentation, according to Borrelli
