Sea Kayaker's Guide to Safety is Published by Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies
Guide Sponsors Include: PCCS, Humane Society of the Commonwealth; U.S. Coast Guard-First District Boston
(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) - 'A Sea Kayaker's Guide to Safety and Stewardship in Massachusetts,' an information guide loaded with tips, equipment checklists and information on wildlife, how to read weather conditions, navigation and maritime signaling, to name a few topics, has been published by the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) for its Waterways of Cape Cod program.

PCCS, The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, sponsored the publication of the guide, available through the Center and most marine outlets.

Whether you paddle inlets, harbors, salt rivers or the open sea, a novice or experienced kayaker, this guide could save your life. A key portion is its Checklist for Sea Kayak Safety, which is divided into three sections. Planning a route and dressing appropriately, basic paddling skills, familiarity with tides, and tracking weather conditions at sea are a few of the thirty vital tips.

The guide's Resources page has lists where you can sign up for boating safety and navigation courses, which agency to call if you see an entangled whale or seal, and how to reach them, emergency numbers for kayakers in distress, and, most importantly, in its Gear List what to pack when you're at sea. Necessary for a safe kayak voyages are: life jacket, paddle, flares, paddle float, bilge pump, and numerous other necessary things.
