    MassSailMassSail Launches Boston Community Days

Marine Science Programs Aboard Spirit of Massachusetts

(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) – MassSail began its second season of marine science programming in Boston with a full slate of education initiatives designed to give students a unique, hands-on learning experience.  MassSail - a joint venture between the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) and the Ocean Classroom Foundation (OCF) - is a series of marine education programs aboard Spirit of Massachusetts to promote public awareness and encourage interest and stewardship in Massachusetts’ rich marine environment through shipboard and dockside programs in Massachusetts coastal cities and towns.

MassSail began its second season of marine science education programs on May 17 and  will begin conducting Boston Community Days programs from June 11 – 23, with day sails and overnight programs for middle school students from Boston area schools.  MassSail students, led by PCCS Marine Education Director Joanne M. Jarzobski, engage in hands-on activities in marine science, natural history and conservation biology relevant to the local marine environment and history.  All curricula options are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for History and/or Social Sciences, or Science and Technology and Engineering.  Students are full participants in the operation of the ship, working with the ship’s professional crew to learn the skills and arts of traditional seafaring. This personal and authentic experience of the ocean world forms a uniquely powerful context for education.  Lessons learned, achievements made, insights gained are internalized and retained, because students are invested in the process.
