The Schooner Spirit of Massachusetts Arrives in Hyannis on 8/16 for Soundkeeper Days
MassSail Marine Education Programs Scheduled
(Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA) - Celebrating the natural beauty and heritage of Nantucket Sound brings the schooner Spirit of Massachusetts and its MassSail marine education program at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies (PCCS) into Hyannis Harbor, Nantucket and Vineyard Haven, for Soundkeeper Days August 16 thru 22.
Soundkeeper Days kicks off the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound's certification as Nantucket Soundkeeper by the national Waterkeeper Alliance.
MassSail is a joint venture between PCCS and the Ocean Classroom Foundation (OCF) to promote public awareness and understanding of Massachusetts' marine environment and heritage aboard the schooner Spirit of Massachusetts.
Soundkeeper Days, sponsored by the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound (APNS,) is co-sponsored by PCCS and Sail Martha's Vineyard, in cooperation with the Ocean Classroom Foundation (OCF.)
Constructed in 1984 at the Charlestown Navy Yard, Spirit of Massachusetts is modeled after the late 19th century fishing vessel Fredonia, designed by Edward Burgess, which sailed to the North Atlantic fishing grounds for cod. Spirit is authentic in rig and construction, though she carries modern navigation and safety equipment. The vessel is fully inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping as a Sailing School Vessel, certified for international ocean voyages. Spirit carries a crew complement of nine, and up to 23 student-sailors.
