Celebrating 35 Years of Research & Education
Our Story
Our story began 35 years ago, when in 1976, three like-minded scientists decided that it was no longer enough to talk and teach about the raw natural beauty of Cape Cod's ever-changing coastline and marine habitats; they wanted to seek answers to biological questions in an effort to preserve Cape Cod's land and seascape for generations. Acting on that shared vision, Dr Graham Giese, Dr Charles "Stormy" Mayo and the late Dr. Barbara Mayo, created the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.
The founders knew that successful preservation of ecosystems depends on detailed knowledge of species and their natural history. Conservation biology became the core of PCCS's work over 35 years ago and we remain committed to this pursuit.
PCCS continues to build on the shared vision of Dr Graham Giese, Dr Charles "Stormy" Mayo and the late Dr. Barbara Mayo, through scientific research with an emphasis on marine mammals and coastal and marine ecosystems, and through educational activities and resources that promote stewardship of coastal and marine habitats.
